Cytology in Paediatric Malignant Solid Tumors
Abstract
Malignant solid tumors constitute a significant cause of death in paediatric age group. The present study was carried to find out the incidence of various solid malignant tumors in paediatric age groups and for comparative study of fine needle aspiration cytology, imprint cytology and histopathology of these tumors. Out of 30 such cases, we got 9 Wilm’s tumors, 7 neuroblastomas, 6 non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas (NHL), 5 Ewing’s sarcomas, 2 retinoblastomas and 1 rhabdomyosarcoma. Most of the small round cell tumors were found below 5 years of age. There was an overall male predominance. FNAC was done in all 30 cases of which cytological diagnosis was possible in 26 cases. Peroperative imprint cytology was done in 22 cases of which 20 were conclusive. Absolute sensitivity of imprint cytology (0.9) was found slightly better than FNAC (0.86). Histology was done in every case for final conclusion. So FNAC can play a great role for early detection of these malignancies if corroborated with clinicoradiological findings.
