Abstract

FNA is a simple and safe procedure that is being used for the diagnosis of primary bone tumors. Our study was done with the aim of examining accuracy of this procedure in the diagnosis of recurrent and metastatic osteosarcoma. We found seven patients from our data files that had undergone FNA for disseminated or recurrent osteosarcoma. All the smears showed pleomorphic spindle cells on the background of pink, homogenous material (osteoid), which varied in proportion in each case. All the cases were diagnosed as osteosarcoma, either recurrent or metastatic. FNA can replace biopsy in follow-up of patients of osteosarcoma.
