Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology of Lymph Nodes - An Institutional Study of 1448 Cases Over a Five Year Period
Abstract
Present study is a retrospective analysis of 1448 lymphadenopathy cases, that had undergone FNAC in the Department of Pathology, NBMC for 5 years between 1996 to 2000. Out of total 3964 FNAC performed during the period, FNAC of 330 cases in 1996 increased to 1303 in 2000 indicating higher compliance of the procedure. NBMC is the only referral centre in the region and it reflects the relative occurrence of the disease in the community. This study reveals that tuberculous lymphadenitis (46.34%) is the commonest ailment causing lymphadenopathy followed by metastatic deposits (20.03%) and reactive hyperplasia (18.92%) while lymphoma comprises only 5% cases. Individuals of 16-30 years were most commonly affected by tuberculous lymphadenitis. Cervical group of lymphnodes was the most frequently involved site. Tribal and hilly population, one of the characteristic population group in the region, were found to be the commonest victim of tuberculous lymphadenitis, which may be related to their poor socio-economic status.
