Cytological Diagnosis of Gout - Report of Two Cases

Ramdas A, Gnanadoss JJ, Mani A, Varghese RG

Abstract

Definitive diagnosis of gout requires demonstration of the monosodium urate crystals under polarized light. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the tophi can be used for early diagnosis as crystals can be demonstrated in wet and stained smears. We report two cases of arthritis in which FNAC played a role in rapid diagnosis of gout and the early institution of treatment.
