Intra-Operative Imprint Cytodiagnosis of Breast Lesions - A Current Perspective
Abstract
Intra-operative cytology of imprint smears is an extremely valuable tool in determining the precise area of surgical extirpation of tumours. This study investigates the value of intra-operative imprint cytology in 799 breast lesions. The technique yielded rapid results when coupled with rapid Hematoxylin and Eosin and rapid Papanicolaou methods of staining. Diagnostic accuracy rate in the present study was 100% for benign lesions and 96.7% for malignant lesions. Clinical correlation contributed to a significant extent towards appropriate cytodiagnosis.
In spite of advent of newer diagnostic modalities, imprint cytology still holds a key position in intra-operative cytodiagnosis even in the current perspective especially in a setup where facilities for frozen section are not available.
