A Case of Fibroadenoma with Spontaneous Infarction
Abstract
Spontaneous infarction of fibroadenoma is a very rare complication. Infarction following fine needle aspiration has been reported in the literature. It is also frequently associated with pregnancy and lactation. It is essential to distinguish spontaneous infarction of fibroadenoma from other malignant and inflammatory conditions on fine needle aspirate smears. In this report we present the case of a fourteen year old girl referred for fine needle aspiration cytology of a breast lump. Smears showed acellular necrotic material and many degenerated and viable clumps of cells. Most of the cells were singly dispersed in the background. Initially FNAC report was inconclusive and the lump was excised. Histological diagnosis of Fibroadenoma with infarction was established. Spontaneous infarction of fibroadenoma should be distinguished from carcinoma and other inflammatory conditions on FNAC. Cytopathologists should be aware of this entity to avoid an erroneous diagnosis of carcinoma or inflammatory lesions of breast.
