Discussion Case #3

n

Our Reasoning & Report

  • Young Pt

  • Small round cell tumour in retroperitoneum

  • Cells with tails

Ganglioneuroblastoma

But were the cells really ganglionic cells?

These were malignant blue cells & the cells had cytoplasmic tails but no true ganglionic features

nThey could have been

n   ?  Rhabdomyoblastic cells

n   ? Cells with a rhabdoid phenotype

nWhat was the exact imaging location? Suprarenal or Renal

nDD should have included:

True Rhabdomyosarcoma?

PNST with rhabdomyoblastic differentiation?

nWilm’s tumour with  rhabdomyoblastic differentiation

  • nThe clinical details and anatomic site is important
  • nThe entire DD of round cells must be considered
  • nBut finally what matters is the correct clinical context and the cell cytology
